New software first step in giant ‘Sandcastle’s’ sustainability bid

Dutch companies Wonam and Zadelhoff are initiating a comprehensive ESG reporting system for the iconic Zandkasteel building in Amsterdam, in what they state is a significant step towards sustainability for the one-time office building previously occupied by a bank.

The new system is being created in collaboration with Blue Module, an independent provider of advanced ESG reporting software solutions, and the partnership will enable transparent and objective reporting on the performance of Zandkasteel – Sandcastle in English, the partners stated.

The almost 90,000 sq m building, designed by architects Alberts & Van Huut, was originally completed in 1986 but has since been transformed into a modern mixed-use building with residential spaces, office areas, an international school, and hospitality venues.

Wonam and Zadelhoff, who jointly own Zandkasteel, state that they view ESG not merely as a regulatory obligation but as a tool to create sustainable value for tenants, investors, and other stakeholders. The ESG reports will support a significant reduction of energy consumption and carbon emissions in the building while enhancing the health and well-being of its occupants.

“ESG for us is not a ‘tick-the-box’ exercise but a strategic tool for creating long-term value,” said Wonam director Robert Kohsiek. “This is essential for our stakeholders, including tenants and financiers, as well as the broader community. Just like a financial report, we can now offer an ESG report and continuously report on the building.”

Blue Module’s software enables Zandkasteel to report its ESG performance in accordance with international standards such as Fitwel, WELL, and BREEAM. These standardised reports provide tenants and investors with insights into the building’s environmental impact and societal contribution and make it possible to demonstrate how Zandkasteel performs in terms of sustainability, health, and well-being.

“Our mission is to elevate ESG transparency through technology,” said Blue Module founder and CEO Paul Wessels. “Our independent and standardised software solutions enable Zandkasteel to meet the highest standards in sustainability and accountability. Together, we can create sustainable value for all stakeholders.”
