Building industry innovation hastens journey to net zero

The construction industry is at the forefront of efforts to improve sustainability in the built environment.

UK construction group Morgan Sindall has a range of solutions, among them a carbon calculator tool, developed in house, called CarboniCa.

“It has been third-party validated by Arup and it’s helping our design teams and our project teams provide recommendations for design and construction to minimise our environmental impact and our overall embodied carbon,” Morgan Sindall Construction Scotland head of responsible business Elizabeth Halliday explained.

Talking to Real Asset Insight’s Richard Betts, she said that the tool can be used at each different stage and at the start of a project and using benchmarking information it can produce a whole-life carbon assessment for a project.

“We’re now working with the supply chain to see what innovations and alternative low-carbon materials are available to reduce that embodied carbon. That’s part of the approach to the net zero carbon building standard, setting these targets and collaborating with the supply chain to reduce embodied carbon,” she said.
