Nobu Manchester to be the tallest tower outside of London

The Salboy Group has been given the green light to build a 76-storey tower in Manchester that at 246 metres will be the tallest skyscraper in the UK outside of London. The building will be known as Nobu Manchester and it will host a 160-bedroom hotel, restaurant and 452 branded residences developed in partnership with the luxury lifestyle brand Nobu Hospitality.

What the 76-storey Nobu Manchester will look like

“It’s a belief that we’ve long held that Manchester deserves to be home to architectural and engineering feats that before now have been the preserve of other global cities,” said Simon Ismail, managing director, Salboy Group.

Manchester City Council has granted planning application for two towers of 76 and 23 storeys at Viadux 2, a £360 million scheme in the centre of the city. The second tower on Great Bridgewater Street will have 133 apartments aimed at the affordable homes market.

This is the second phase of the Viadux scheme to regenerate an 8,000 sq m  brownfield site in the city. The first phase was a 40-storey tower with 370 apartments which was completed on time and on budget and is fully sold out.

“As the location of not just the tallest tower outside London but a large number of high-quality affordable homes, Viadux has the potential to become a symbol of this city’s aspirations and confidence in itself,” said Ismail. “Viadux now promises to shape not only Manchester’s skyline for years to come, but the city’s sense of identity on the global stage.”

Salboy’s construction partner Domis expects to commence work on the site this year.

Nobu Manchester will be the brand’s third hotel in the UK and the first outside London, and it will also host the UK’s first Nobu branded residence. The brand, part-owned by actor Robert De Niro, has opened 36 luxury hotels around the world.

“Manchester is a vibrant, world-class city, and we’re proud to be part of a project that will bring the Nobu experience to this destination through a truly exceptional mixed-use project,” said Trevor Howell, chief executive, Nobu Hospitality. “Viadux 2 represents the kind of visionary development we seek—integrated, design-led, and rooted in cultural and community connection.”
