Barings buys Australian Altis as it gears up for Asian expansion

Investment manager Barings has done a deal to acquire 100% of Australian real estate firm Altis Property Partners.

Charles Weeks.

Worldwide, Barings has 16 offices with over 200 investment professionals and is present in nine countries. This deal will add 44 property professionals and A$6.079 billion to Barings assets under management of US$ 48.9 billion. Altis mainly focuses on value-add strategies and these complement Barings’ real estate debt team in Australia. The Altis executive directors and staff will remain with the firm.

Barings has private credit and real estate debt investments in Australia already. Asia Pacific makes up about a third of Barings’ third-party AUM and is expected to be a key driver of growth in the future.

Charles Weeks, who is Barings’ head of Europe and APAC real estate, said the deal will help further build out the real estate platform in Asia Pacific, “before expanding into other markets such as Japan and Korea.”
