Manchester: High quality real estate critical to FDI success

Manchester’s dynamic economy is powered by a robust real estate sector that plays a key role in attracting foreign direct investment (FDI).

According to Joe Manning, managing director of MIDAS, Manchester’s inward investment agency, the city’s real estate sector has been integral to the region’s economic success and growth. In an interview at Expo Real 2024, Manning highlighted that the private-public partnership at the heart of the city’s real estate development has allowed Manchester to position itself as a global business hub.

“MIDAS was established as a collaboration between the public and private sectors, with real estate as a central focus,” Manning explained. This collaboration has resulted in successful projects such as MediaCityUK — home to the BBC in the Northwest—and the regeneration of areas surrounding Manchester City’s sports complex. These projects have not only transformed the city’s physical landscape but have also enhanced its appeal to international investors.

Manning pointed to the city’s ongoing efforts to expand its real estate offering across multiple sectors, from commercial and logistics spaces to residential developments. This comprehensive approach, he explained, is crucial to sustaining inward investment flows, particularly in high-growth industries such as technology, finance and innovation.

“The availability of high-quality real estate across commercial, logistics, and residential sectors is absolutely vital in supporting FDI,” Manning said. Manchester’s real estate offerings are designed to attract companies in diverse sectors, and Manning noted that the city is also focused on creating an attractive living environment.

With a thriving innovation district and continued regeneration in the city centre, Manchester is creating spaces that are not only business-friendly but also conducive to talent retention. As the city continues to grow faster than the UK average, its strategic focus on real estate development remains critical in shaping Manchester’s future as a business destination.

“The real estate sector is central to our success story, and as we plan for the future, ensuring that we have a high-quality offering in all sectors is crucial,” Manning added.

This focus on real estate as a cornerstone of FDI success reflects the growing importance of integrated development strategies that blend business, innovation, and livability. With ongoing efforts to modernise and expand its real estate landscape, Manchester is well-positioned to continue attracting international companies seeking a vibrant and sustainable business environment.
