Systematic approach needed for filtering ESG compatibility

Applying ESG criteria demands a fairly rigorous approach to filtering potential acquisitions and for German logistics and industrial property specialist Garbe Industrial Real Estate employs a digital investment check system.

“If the property we are looking at is not suited to a strict ESG type of fund then it might be suitable for another but if it is not even suitable for that you say ‘okay, we don’t want to invest’ because it is not within our ESG scope,” says Garbe’s head of research Tobias Kassner.

Speaking to Real Asset Insight’s Richard Betts he said that when contemplating development it is important to discover whether a new building is needed at all. “Every time you build something you are generating lots of carbon dioxide,” he said. But when new build is unavoidable Garbe has developed a prototype that ensures all aspects of ESG are considered.
