Iceland’s primary airport, Keflavík International Airport (KEF), established itself many years ago as an important stopover between Europe and the US, and air traffic has grown substantially as a result. Its fast growth, and a strategic vision to leverage the airport’s full potential, is creating significant opportunities for international investors and partners to play a role.

KEF and Keflavik Airport Development Company (Kadeco) recently presented ambitious masterplans for the airport and its surrounding area. KEF, Iceland’s most important infrastructure and the gateway to the country, foresees continued strong growth in passenger numbers, both in tourism and transit. This generates opportunities for the adjacent municipalities but also challenges. More air travel puts pressure on all public infrastructure and has historically generated economic fluctuations.

Jointly, KEF and Kadeco have produced a 2050 vision for the airport area together with the nearby municipalities. The masterplan consists of focus areas accommodating future business opportunities, residential zones, green industrial parks and locations for R&D and innovation in aviation technologies.
