Swedish battery maker to spend €164m on Gdańsk plant

Swedish battery manufacturer Northvolt is to invest $200 million (€164 million) in the development of a new factory for the assembly of sustainable energy storage systems in Gdańsk, Poland.

The 50,000 sq m factory will be developed in two stages. The new plant, which will start operations in 2022, is being developed in the Pomeranian Investment Centre near the Port of Gdańsk and its DCT container terminal. The new facility will also include an engineering R&D centre of excellence. The initiative will create 500 new jobs in the Gdańsk region.

The plant will have an initial annual production capacity of 5 GWh and a potential future capacity of 12 GWh. The battery systems will be produced using lithium-ion cells supplied from the Northvolt’s gigabyte factory for the production of lithium-ion batteries in Skellefteå, Sweden.

The company said in a statement that the investment will enable an increase in its manufacturing capacity of battery modules and systems in order to fulfil contracts. Clients include ABB, BMW Group, Scania, Siemens, Vattenfall, Vestas and the Volkswagen Group.

“The new factory will deliver sophisticated, sustainable energy storage systems to support the transformation of Europe’s electricity grid and its industry,”  said Northvolt co-founder and CEO Peter Carlsson.
