Amazon.pl launch continues the retailer’s roll out in Poland

Amazon’s tenth fulfilment centre in Poland is due to open in Swiebodzin this year.

In a move that underlines the growing penetration of online retail businesses, Amazon is launching a dedicated service for Poland: Amazon.pl.

Although Amazon has operated in Poland since 2014, the online retailer said the new service will provide Polish customers with a new shopping experience and local small businesses with the opportunity to reach more customers in Poland and beyond. Such selling partners account for more than 50% of everything sold on Amazon globally, the firm said.

“Amazon has been supporting Polish customers and selling partners across our different European stores for many years, but the next step is to bring a full consumer retail offering to Poland and we are making those plans now,” said Alex Ootes, Vice President EU Expansion at Amazon.

Amazon’s presence has already had a major impact on the logistics real estate sector in Poland. The company has so far procured nine fulfilment centres, thus creating 18,000 jobs. These facilities, of which Panattoni Europe has developed at least seven on a built-to-suit basis, include facilities in Sady near Poznan, Sosnowiec, Kolbaskowo near Szczecin, Bielany Wroclawskie where there are two facilities, Pawlikowice near Lodz, in Lodz itself, at Okmiany near Boleslawiec and Gliwice.

A tenth fulfilment centre (pictured above) is due to open in Swiebodzin this year and it is believed that Panattoni is the developer.

Amazon also has an office in Warsaw for its web services division. The firm also has a technology development centre located in the Olivia Business Centre, Gdansk, from whence the Alexa voice-operated virtual assistant originated.

According to the US Chamber of Commerce, Amazon is Poland’s largest US-owned employer and is also the third-largest American investor in the country.
